Sustainability in Aviation: Green Practices for Ground Handling and Under-the-Wing Operations

sustainability

Reducing delays is key to fuel efficiency in the aviation industry. In fact, a study based on one US airline found that delays caused by air traffic management and terminal inefficiencies account for an extra 1.0-1.5% and 1.5-4.5% of fuel usage, respectively. It was also calculated that when delays are anticipated, the fuel impact is only 10-20% of the amount compared to unexpected delays. This highlights the importance of optimal planning when working to improve sustainability.

A promising path toward achieving fuel savings is using cloud-based aviation management software. In this article, we’ll review how different systems reduce the amount of time aircraft spend idling on the ramp causing emissions – and some other technologies that are making operations greener.

How Cloud Based Aviation Software Improves Sustainability

The process of aircraft turnaround is complex and requires meticulous planning and execution if flights are to leave on time.

Reducing Reliance on APUs

Extended ramp times increase the reliance on auxiliary power units (APUs). APUs take fuel from the aircraft’s fuel system in order to generate electric power to supply the aircraft when it’s on the ground, while the main engines are inactive. Electric ground power units (GPUs) are a more sustainable alternative but they’re not available at all airports.

How Aviation Software Supports Sustainability

With modern software, airlines can streamline workflows and minimise ramp time. For example, an effective turnaround management system can ensure that all ground handling activities are coordinated efficiently, reducing the time spent running APUs. This software can provide real-time visibility into available resources, such as ground support equipment and personnel, helping management make informed decisions.

Reducing Emissions Caused by Delays

Delays don’t just increase fuel use on the ground. When an aircraft flies faster to make up for lost time, it consumes extra fuel – yet another reason to use an aviation solution that keeps operations running like clockwork.

Collaborative Decision Making

Cloud based aviation software supports collaborative decision making among various stakeholders, providing a centralised platform for real-time information sharing. As a result, airlines, airports, air traffic control, ground handlers and MRO operations teams can all access and update critical data simultaneously from any location.

The cloud infrastructure allows for seamless integration of multiple data sources, creating a comprehensive operational picture. For example, an airline can instantly share updated flight plans, while ground handlers can provide real-time updates on turnaround progress.

This real-time collaboration enables staff to make informed decisions quickly, especially during disruptions. For example, if a flight is delayed due to a maintenance issue, all affected parties can immediately adjust their plans, potentially mitigating the impact on subsequent operations.

How Effective Load Management Optimises Fuel Consumption

Accurately calculating an aircraft’s weight and balance is not just a matter of safety. Factors such as the total weight and the centre of gravity are essential for controllability, but an overloaded or imbalanced aircraft can increase fuel burn due to the impact on aerodynamic performance. Our solution, FIRST load, is a tablet based application that allows load control staff to manage everything on-the-go.

Baggage Handling Systems and Fuel Savings

Mishandled baggage is another issue that can inadvertently lead to increased fuel consumption (due to mishandled bags being rerouted). Thankfully, baggage reconciliation software improves tracking and speeds up loading and unloading, vastly reducing mishandling rates.

A baggage handling system provides greater visibility into processes through features such as:

  • Real-time tracking and updates on loading progress
  • Automated alerts on bag status
  • Transfer optimisation tools
  • Tools to arrange efficient rerouting
  • Reporting for compliance and performance monitoring

Other Technologies That Improve Ground Handling Sustainability

Beyond the core software used to manage ground handling processes, how else can aircraft operators keep their emissions to a minimum?

Electric Ground Support Equipment and Alternative Fuels

As discussed by IATA, research focusing on Europe showed that electrically powered GSE produce 48% less CO2 emissions than GSE with internal combustion engines that use fossil fuels. They also state that if the findings were extrapolated to global operations – and if all GSE were electric – CO2 emissions could be reduced by 1.8 million tonnes per year.

More Benefits of Electric GSE

Other benefits include:

  • Better air quality for airport staff and nearby communities.
  • Electric GSE is between 5.5 to 8 dB quieter than its fossil fuel counterparts. This would create a better work environment for ground crews and potentially reduce noise disturbances for neighbouring areas.
  • Electric GSE often has lower operational costs over its lifetime.

Sustainable GSE Fuels

Sustainable fuels are another option for powering GSE. This would help reduce emissions in areas where there is not enough electric supply or generating capacity to completely switch to electric.

RFID and IoT Integration

The integration of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors with baggage reconciliation systems can further enhance efficiency and reduce errors.

RFID tags enable the contactless scanning of bags; this reduces reliance on printed barcodes, speeds up the loading process, and ultimately reduces the likelihood of mishandling. IoT devices can provide real-time information about the location and condition of baggage throughout its journey – and this makes it easier to keep customers informed.

Fuel Management and SAF Procurement Systems

Platforms are emerging that assist the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and track its availability at different airports. This information – combined with data on route planning – helps optimise the amount of fuel an aircraft carries. And every kilogram saved contributes to lower emissions.

With advanced analytics and machine learning, fuel management software can assess many different parameters and scenarios, providing recommendations on how to save fuel. These systems also help ensure compliance with emerging regulations around SAF usage.

Conclusion

Efficient processes reduce fuel consumption, driving sustainability in ground handling and under the wing operations. Cloud based aviation management software is key to efficiency gains, vastly improving baggage handling, load optimisation, and turnaround management on the whole. Other advances include RFID and IoT technology, the electrification of GSE, and SAF procurement and management systems.
